Art Showcase

The day before Christmas break was a big day for our students and their friends - we held a big art exhibit in our school's library to show case all of their amazing art work from this fall! With the help of our artist and our school's music teacher, we set up an awesome display of all of their work. I think we had 45 students participate all together from 6 different classrooms (3 special ed rooms with 3 rooms of peer helpers). Since we all had our own sessions and didn't each do the same projects, it was really great to see it all together and how each of our classes differed based on the age and abilities of the students. For example - we all did Self portraits - but each class did theirs differently with a different art medium. Like wise, another week we all did stained glass - but each one was a different image - shapes, Touch Math or Sight Words.

We invited all the staff and students in our school along with our students' parents. We planned the event for the same day as the holiday music program and invited anyone there for that to walk through as well. I was really appreciative that our Superintendent even took the time to come! She spent quite a while looking at the art work, asking about the students that made the pieces and showing her support. That meant so much!

The entire art program was such an amazing experience and it was really neat for our students and their peer mentors to see their art work showcased in this way for everyone to see their talents. It was a lot of work to pull together but it was worth it to see it all come together in such an awesome way! While our art class is 'over' - the fun associated with it is not. Our students have the opportunity to submit their art work to several exhibits around the state which we plan to do. We also plan to stay involved with our peer mentors and plan a game day each week! We have a great thing going and want to keep that for the rest of the year!!

I'm still marveling at that cornucopia! And in the top picture, what looks like a "5" is really awesome, too.

I can only imagine how much work this must have been to manage, but what a fantastic project, all the way around!
