The Way We Were

As I mentioned in my last post, it is amazing to me that a decade is coming to an end...and what an amazing decade it has been in my life! My life has changed in so many amazing ways over the last 10 years and I wanted to take some time to look down memory lane and think about all that has shaped my life over the past decade. So grab a drink and some popcorn (or what's left of the Christmas cookies) and sit back and help me relive the past decade...

2000
Paul and I had been dating for about 3 years when we rang in Y2K with friends and celebrated our new engagement (Nov. 1999). We spent the year planning our wedding and moved in together in a one bedroom apartment after having a 3 year 'long distance relationship". I student taught in two local school districts (one great experience, one not-so-great) and graduated from Central Michigan University with my bachelor's degree in special education in August. We traveled to Puerto Rico for Paul's friend/roommate's wedding. I landed my dream job and began teaching students with Autism shortly after. I bought my first brand new car on my own with my first paycheck. I became an Aunt for the first time when Cody was born in July. I began to work on my Master's Degree at Oakland University. We began to look for houses and fell in love with one right away and signed the papers just days before the year came to an end - days after one of the biggest snowstorms ever hit our area.

2001
We moved into our new home in early January amidst 2+ feet of snow. We became husband and wife on April 21st and waited until July to take our honeymoon. We visited our beautiful home state of Michigan and spent several days on Mackinac Island, saw the Pictured Rocks and visited Tahquamenon Falls during one of the coldest July's I can recall! We sat atop the highest point on Mackinac Island for the fireworks and saw at least 5 displays from at least 2 states and 2 countries! We got our first dog, Shadow, in October after he wandered into our yard and hearts.

2002
Paul's dad sadly lost his battle with cancer and passed away on March 17. Paul and I went to Las Vegas and stayed at the Luxor for Spring Break. That summer, we traveled north to beautiful Traverse City's wine country. After two years of teaching at my school's main campus, I moved to an 'outcenter' program. We traveled to Chicago over Thanksgiving weekend for a family wedding.

2003
We adopted our second dog, Nola, from the Humane Society in March. We returned to Las Vegas with friends and stayed at New York, New York and The Hoover Dam. We traveled to Toronto, Canada for a summer vacation and were in the middle of the huge city when the memorable Blackout hit! We cut our stay in Toronto short to visit friends in New York instead and found out the blackout had hit as far as Michigan and Ohio! When we returned, we did some home improvements and retiled our mudroom. We also fenced in our backyard and planted a Dawn Redwood in the backyard in Paul's Dad's honor.

2004
We kicked off the year in beautiful Traverse City to celebrate Paul's birthday with the Winemakers of Chateau Grand Traverse. We got a taste of twins when our good friends welcomed their girls just 2 days before our wedding anniversary in April. We traded in Paul's old Buick Regal for a brand new Avalanche and Paul was excited to have a truck finally! After my classroom in Goodrich was closed, I began to teach in Flint at a wonderful elementary school. We did some major relandscaping of the front of our house that summer and converted our garden to raised beds and we remodeled our family room that fall. I graduated from Oakland University with my Master's Degree in December.

2005
We returned to snowy Traverse City for the Valentine's weekend Snowshoe stomp and Wine and Chocolate weekend. June was a whirlwind month with lots of travel. It began when my sister got married on the beach of South Haven. We then traveled to Cancun a few weeks later and just days after returning from that trip, we went camping and tubing with a bunch of my friends for an annual canoe/tube trip. I started this blog in July! I traveled to Arizona with my best friend Lisa for a weekend. Our puppy Nola had surgery on her leg in December for a luxating patella.

2006
Our wine travels continued as we ventured into Michigan's Southwest Wine Trail to celebrate Paul's birthday. We were excited to discover in April that I was pregnant and even more excited to find out in June that we were having twins! We traveled to Traverse City once again that summer, this time with my sister and brother-in-law (we have not been back since!) but I was the designated driver as the other 3 enjoyed the wineries. Paul built a new staircase railing leading upstairs and worked hard to put together a beautiful bedroom for our twins. I joined our local Mothers of Multiples group that fall. We took a 'baby moon' to the Ann Arbor area about a month before we welcomed our babies. 3rd trimester complications resulted in an early arrival of Jacob & Sarah on November 25, but we were blessed with two healthy babies and they came home after 10 days in the NICU. We celebrated our first Christmas with children on their 1 month birthday.

2007
Jacob & Sarah were baptized on January 21, their daddy's birthday. We walked in our first March of Dimes March for Babies in April. I turned 30 in May and celebrated my first Mother's Day in the same weekend. We celebrated countless milestones (many documented on this blog!) as Jacob and Sarah grew and developed. We took our first family vacation and spent the 4th of July in South Haven with my sister and brother-in-law. They got a taste of life with babies as they were expecting their first the next year. Jacob & Sarah celebrated their first birthday in November.

2008
Sarah kicked off the year and began walking in January. We became an Aunt and Uncle again when my sister had her first son, Luke, on January 27. We celebrated my parents' 40th wedding anniversary in February. Paul and I took our first night away from the kids in March and went to Grand Rapids. We were very surprised to discover we would soon become a family of 5 when I became pregnant in April. Jacob showed some gross motor delays but just about the time we really started to worry, he began to walk around 18 months. We spent a late summer weekend at my sister's and took the kids to Binder Park Zoo where they got to feed a Giraffe and also spent a weekend on Houghton Lake with our friends Ben and Lisa. Jacob and Sarah went to Playhouse Disney Live! after being Mickey and Minnie for Halloween. Paul worked throughout the year to finish our basement and prepare 'Cupcake's' new bedroom.

2009
Our year started off with the wonderful addition of Adam Michael on January 13. I spent 3 months at home with our children before returning to work at the end of March. Jacob and Sarah got to see their first Hot Air Balloons over Memorial Day Weekend. We were busy all year through with play dates and family events and lots of trips to the Zoo and Children's Museum. We traveled to Chicago in June for a cousin's wedding and enjoyed a long weekend in the windy city. Adam was baptized in July. After 8 years in our house, Paul and I finally decided to paint our bedroom and make the space 'ours.' My sister and nephew spent a few days with us at the end of the summer and we spent a weekend with my them in Kalamazoo again in September. Jacob and Sarah turned 3 in November and we looked forward to celebrating Adam's 1st birthday in the new year!

Who knows what 2010 will hold for us, let alone the next ten years! I know our lives will be full with our family as our children grow. Its really been a lot of fun to look back over the past 10 years and I can only imagine what I could write about on the dawn of 2020.

Happy New Year!

'Twas the flu that ruined Christmas

What a week it's been! It didn't start off on the best note because instead of having our 'usual' two week break at Christmas time, I still had to work Monday and Tuesday and I was quite bummed as we'd been so busy that I felt we hadn't really had time to do any of the fun holiday activities with the kids that we wanted to. So Monday, for various reasons, started off as a long, busy day and then took a major nosedive that night as the flu hit me - hard.

I was so sick Monday night and Tuesday and missed the last day of work anyways. Paul was busy trying to finish up helping Santa build something special for Jacob and I feared the flu would take our household by storm...and that it did.

Paul fell ill Wednesday morning but it appeared to be a weaker version of what I had and we all seemed ok to celebrate the holidays with his family on Thursday for Christmas Eve. I kept waiting for Sarah to start showing signs of the flu though because she was a handful - in the worst way - Wednesday and Thursday.

We woke up Christmas morning, seeming to be ok - Jacob and Sarah were up and excited to see what Santa brought them and Adam took a very long morning nap. As we got moving and ready to head to my family's holiday gathering, things started to build against us. Jacob started showing tummy trouble and Sarah made more and more complaints of various issues. As I started to clue in to the things that were bothering her (she'd been saying for 2 days that her 'teeth' hurt...then she had said her feet hurt, but I thought it was just dry skin...and then she kept pointing out 'mosquito bites' on her hands...)...a light went off in my head and looked her over more carefully, put 2 & 2 together and realized she appeared to have Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease...on top of Jacob coming down with the stomach flu.

Christmas plans canceled.

I was really disappointed in not being able to spend the day with my family (we live 1-2 hours away from everyone so we don't get to see them often enough anyways..) and Sarah was a very difficult little girl for several days - making it NOT a Christmas I care to remember. Thankfully we were able to plan to gather with my family again next week to celebrate Christmas and hope and pray we're all healthy by then!

On the fun side of our day, some favorite presents included a new Mother's Ring for me, with Adam's birthstone included...a Wii for Paul...a train table for Jacob....a baby doll and set of Princesses for Sarah...and a musical chime walking toy for Adam that he loves.

I'll add more pics later of our holiday celebration with Paul's family.

We hope you all had a wonderful - and HEALTHY - Christmas!!

Hot Dogs and Santa Claus

Trying to pick myself up off the couch today after a bout of the flu and hoping and praying that the kids don't get it just in time for Christmas! Paul has a touch of it today but so far, it doesn't seem as bad as mine was.

After reading Missy's post about Say What?!?! Wednesday, I remembered a few funny things the kids said this week that I didn't want to forget...

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

First up, at dinner Friday night...

Sarah was inspecting her hot dog and asked me what was in it. When I told her "meat" she made a disgusted face and said she was all done (she'd eaten about half of it). When I asked her what she thought was in a hot dog, she said "chocolate."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

When I was talking to the kids about Santa the other night, I asked them how he was going to get into the house. Jacob told me he would just use the key!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Sarah, ever so nicely, walked into school yesterday and announced to her entire class and teachers that Mommy was home with a sick belly. Thank goodness she spared them (& me!) the gory details!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

After confidently meeting Santa for the 2nd time and sitting on his lap last week, we were surprised by an encounter with him at Fazolli's this weekend when we stopped for dinner. He came around the corner and Sarah freaked out, started crying and ran to Paul, begging him to pick her up! She continued to cry and scramble until Santa pulled out some candy canes and then she instantly turned off her tears, accepted her candy cane and told me "Santa is nice!"

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Also playing along with Twinfatuation's Way Back When-esday. Jacob and Sarah were just 3 weeks old when this was taken in 2006 and sitting next to the Polar Express Santa from Hallmark. Yes, they were significantly smaller than him at that point! Jacob might have been up to 4 lbs 6 oz and Sarah around 6 lbs, at most. I remember that I could so easily carry both of them in one arm and they fit in their stockings with room to spare...

A lil late

Adam turned 11 months old last week and I almost forgot to get his monthly photo because he woke up that morning with an awful case of pink eye and I didn't want that in his picture but then I almost forgot to take it at all! So, I have to say he's 11 months and 1 week in these photos!

11 months

He continues to be the happiest lil guy I know. He's pointing and waving at everything in sight and gives kisses that are sweeter than candy. He's somehow managed to whistle (yes, whistle!) a few times recently although we have yet to catch it on video. He's eating table food like a champ but I have yet to find a meat that he likes other than chicken. He has major issues with texture - not just in the mouth but on his hands as well (he freaks at feel of mashed potatoes but likes the taste). He is still all about mommy but doles out kisses more freely to his daddy (maybe he's thinking "I'll give you kisses Dad, just don't take me from Mama!")

It is hard for me to even realize he'll be a year in less than a month because part of me feels like he's always been a part of us but at the same time - I can't believe a year has passed already! I'm excited to see what he'll think of Christmas and presents this week. I am also very glad to have a break from work these next two weeks to spend with him and his siblings at home.

Adam has a very special friend at his day care - a girl friend if you must! And he's already going for older women! Megan had been his primary caregiver at his school until recently and he adores her (the feeling is mutual!). She has since moved to a different building but she visited today and Adam was so excited to see her! He kept snuggling with her and giving her kisses. There are not too many people that Adam will willingly go to from Mama and he went right to Megan this afternoon. Here he is with her, lunging for another kiss!

*Megan if you read this - thanks for always giving our lil guy so much love and TLC!

Mission: Santa

Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, clowns or anything else dressed in a costume has not been a welcome site for my kids in the past. Witness the past few years of our double doom with Santa:

2007

2008

This year, our kids saw Santa a few weeks ago and we witnessed Sarah walk up to Santa and stand next to him and actually enjoy talking to him but she wouldn't sit on his lap. Adam was terrified and Jacob hid behind a tree.

We knew we had a few more chances to visit the big guy this season and wondered if we'd have any more success. Last night was our annual Mothers of Multiples family Christmas party and I was so proud of my two who were willing to walk right up and get on his lap and tell them what they wanted!! Adam was still terrified but I was the mean mommy and let him sit there anyways for the photo. (hey...Jacob and Sarah had to do it...so does he!)

The only complaint I have for the night was that after all the discussion of what she wanted for Christmas and the relief that we seemed to settle on a Baby last night...Sarah squealed to Santa the minute he walked in the room (loud enough to be heard over the excited chatter of about 40 other kids) "I want a Piggy!!!!"

Mission Accomplished!

(Well...at least 66%!)

Santa has a tough job...

So this year is the first Christmas that my kids really "get" Christmas, Santa and how this all works. They have gotten so excited over putting up the Christmas tree, seeing the lights on the houses, hanging out stockings, checking the daily Advent calendar, talking about baby Jesus' birthday, Santa, and the almighty "Naughty List."

It's been really fun to talk about Santa and what kind of presents they want him to bring (pending a spot on his "NICE list", that is). Its also been fun to try to fulfill their little wishes so they can really see and remember what the magic of it is all about! They are at that age where they are learning and discovering and we really want to make it special. So barring any major fiascos, we hoped to be able to give them what their hearts desired this year (it really wasn't much...).

Jacob is an open book - the kid has trains on the brain. A few things may catch his eye in the Toys R Us catalog, but he always comes back to the coveted Choo Choos! (and the kid has a reason to desire them so...despite his love, he only has 3 little trains, no tracks and nothing else train related...I know...he's a neglected kid!). I think he will be more than happy with what Santa will be leaving for him on Christmas morning.

Sarah's request(s) though...have been a bit more complicated. It started out very simple really...Princesses! That is easy enough! She also mentioned a Baby doll here and there but she has no Princess toys so we...I mean Santa...figured that was a great gift for her. Then when we went to see Santa a few weeks ago, she walked right up to him and told him she wanted a Mouse.

Huh?

A mouse?

Really?....what KIND of mouse exactly??

My first thought was maybe it was this mouse - Perla from Cinderella...at least it fit in with the idea of Princesses....but when I asked her about it...she said nope, not that mouse.

So then I thought maybe it was this mouse - the little one from the book The Mitten by Jan Brett. It is a recent favorite read at bedtime and she always giggles when it tickles the bear's nose and makes him sneeze...but when I asked her if this was the one she wanted...it was a nope again.
After grilling her at dinner the other night (as in asking questions...not as in prepping her to eat...) she told us the mouse was pink and had a boat. Perfect...that didn't help us at all! But we did wonder then if maybe it was this - it's not a mouse - but maybe that's how she saw it...but I'm pretty certain she's never seen the show and although it has a boat, the "mouse" is not pink....

So then I opened it up for discussion amongst Facebook friends...and everyone brainstormed these mice....

I'm pretty certain she's never seen a Zhu Zhu pet....
I know she knows who Mickey is so she'd tell me that if he was the case....
And then I thought just MAYBE Angelina was it...but when I asked her that yesterday morning, she shoved the book away and most definitely said "no!"

Perfect...Santa, nor her parents, have ANY idea what she really wants for Christmas.

So as a last resort, I asked her teacher if she's said anything there or has a toy there that might explain this interest. Danielle told me she had no idea but that day they'd drawn pictures of what they wanted for Christmas and this is what she drew and said....

A KITTY??? Seriously?? Sure - to catch the unexplainable mouse, huh? And then she tells me she doesn't just want one kitty...but THREE kitties - a black, a red, and a purple one!! Sheesh kid - you're not making this easy!

Ok...this Santa is thinking the Tooth Fairy has it easy - leave some money under the pillow and you're all good!

So last night at dinner we talked more and I asked her if Santa brought you just ONE toy - what would you want....

And with a huge sigh of relief from the other side of the table, she said a Baby Doll.

Whew...now THAT, Santa can handle!

While Sarah changed her mind for the 500th time, her easy-to-please brother simply said he wanted a Christmas tree...guess I'll be returning the trains tomorrow!

So, what is on YOUR kids' wish list this Christmas??

Holly Babies

I came across this photo the other day and remembered how much I love this one, taken in December of 2007 of my two lil ones!! Ironically, I remember that their PJ's were purchased by my friend Melissa, who is being induced today for her first baby! (I can't wait to hear the news of Baby G's arrival!!).

I look at this photo of them, just 1 month older than Adam is now and see so much of both of them in him...Sarah's eyes and grin, Jacob's face and nose, Sarah's hair coloring (although he has more hair than the two of them put together in this photo!)...so neat to see how much he resembles them both but is yet so unique!

But, in my search to find this one again to post today, I came across this second photo and I just had to post it also! Remember in my post yesterday, I have a photo of Sarah, sweetly sitting and admiring her favorite ornament on the tree? Well...there must really be something special about that ornament because I found this photo of her from 2007 - checking out the SAME ornament!! It is a Precious Moments girl sitting on a swing that I got several years ago from my Mom. (It is really cute...). How sweet that this one ornament catches her eye so well!!

Neige $100 Gift Card GUEST GIVEAWAY!!!!

oh how i could dress my lil ones up in clothes from here!!

Trim the Tree

We've been so busy lately that we've barely had time to get our Christmas tree up! We finally snuck the project in this weekend and let Jacob and Sarah stay up a bit later than usual on Sunday night to help decorate it. They helped last year but this year was so much more exciting - oh to see Christmas through a child's eyes!!

As I pulled out each ornament, they would shriek in delight, taking turns claiming them as their own and finding a special spot on the tree to place it. They each quickly sorted which ones were for 'boys' vs. 'girls' and especially loved anything with a character on it (i.e. Mickey, Pooh, etc). They actually did really well listening to which ones needed to go up higher out of Adam's reach and handing off fragile ones to Daddy to hang up high. They even spaced them out so that we only had to relocate a few!

We still need one more strand of lights on and I want to put the garland up to finish the tree but they are both very proud of their work and took time to admire the beauty of it all both that night and again the next morning. As they left for school Monday, they each walked up, waved "good bye!" to the tree and said "bye" to each of their favorite ornaments!

I'll be sure to post better pics once its completely adorned along with some of our other holiday decor!

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The good, the bad and the ugly pretty much sums up the weekend here. Let me break it down...

The Good

* A Friday night movie with my BFF. Lisa and I have been friends since we were 3 and 4 years old, married good friends and are still extremely close. Our busy lives don't allow us to spend nearly as much time together as we'd like but we both agreed to find time soon to do SOMETHING, just the two of us, and we voted for a movie this weekend. We saw The Blind Side and it was great and spent some time after the movie chatting, too!

* Another night out Saturday for a surprise birthday party. My friend and fellow Mom of Multiples (our twins share the same birthday, just 2 years apart) Denise turned the big 4-0 this week and her hubby went to great lengths to throw her a perfectly orchestrated surprise birthday party! Paul and I had a fun night, just relaxing and talking with friends.

Does she look surprised or what!?!

Moms of Multiples
Another thing in common with Denise - we're the tall ones in the back!!

Susie, Lisa and myself

* We finally got our Christmas tree up and stockings hung! I'll post pics soon once the finishing touches are complete but it was lots of fun seeing Jacob and Sarah get so excited about each ornament that was pulled out of the box. The big question is how Adam will be with the tree...

* Speaking of Adam...Sunday was his 11 month birthday! I didn't even take his Mickey Mouse picture today (see The Ugly below...) but will surely get an update on his soon!

The Bad & The Ugly

Thankfully the Goods far outweigh the bad & ugly but Sunday seemed to be a long day. We started it off with The Ugly - as in poor Adam's gunky and puffy eyes and face as he fell as the next victim of the Pink Eye Plague that does not want to leave our house. (Sarah is the only one now who has not had it but I doubt she will go unscathed - it'll probably hit the day before Christmas or something...). We should have taken his cue and stayed home from church that morning because I had to tell Sarah that Jesus had a direct line to Santa when she misbehaves at church and that did not even seem to phase her as she screamed and threw herself on the floor during church. I had taken her out in the vestibule but Paul could still hear her screeching through the 'sound proof' walls' - nice!

I then tried to keep Adam from touching everything during mass so he would not spread his eye funk but I swear, that boy rubbed his face on every square inch of the pew we were sitting on! Then I felt bad that a couple old ladies behind us reached out to shake his hand and flirt with him but they did so before I could warn them that he had an infection...but then figured they should know better not to grab at a baby with their own germs so I figured that if they get pink eye...its their own fault...I know, NOT nice of me, but it was too late already!

While most people are counting down to Christmas...I have a different countdown...that to our holiday break! 7 more days and it can't come soon enough!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Jacob and Sarah were just one month old on Christmas Day 2006 and had been home for about 2 weeks. One of the first things I did once they were home was try for a cute picture for our Christmas card - and the following is what we got! I still love this photo!

They could have fit IN their stockings!
In fact, I think we have a photo of that somewhere!
